This article examines the challenges and implications of introducing veto power in the East African Community (EAC). Originally established to promote economic integration among member states, the EAC has faced hurdles like inconsistent financial contributions, delayed ratification of agreements, and consensus-based decision-making slowdowns. A proposal from Kenya seeks to amend the EAC treaty to introduce veto power, granting more influence to financially stronger states. However, the article argues that this approach may deepen regional inequality, risking fragmentation and undermining the cooperative principles central to the EAC. Instead, it suggests revisiting membership criteria and reinforcing governance to address structural issues and balance member interests effectively.
