To New Beginnings

To New Beginnings

During my childhood, while others were fortunate enough to watch cartoons and read comics, I spent most of mine consuming global affairs. Not resulting from an innate sense of divine inspiration, but the lack of confidence I had as an African child to dare ask my parents to change the channel.

Alas, youth disappeared, and with the death of the adolescent ego and the achievement of maturity, what the young boy found an inconvenience, the man has deemed an invaluable supplement to life's education. Unconsciously, from a young age, I understood how the world worked; the good, the bad, and the ever so slightly psychotic.

Yet there was a flaw.

As I observed the silver screens, print magazines, and newspapers, I came to the realization that the images I was shown, along with the stories I was being told, about myself, my country, its people, their hopes, dreams, and desires, did not match up to my lived experience. There, laid bare, was a glaring disconnect. I and many others were being told our factions were impoverished when all we saw in our eyes were riches; where they showed comprehensive poverty, we saw an immeasurable wealth of life, knowledge, and wisdom.

At that very moment, a seed was planted: to share a beautiful reality with as many as I could—not simply to counter a broken narrative, but to celebrate the charm I saw in the eyes, heard in the voices, and felt within the spirit, of the people who made a house a home.

Today, my team and I aim to realize that dream. It is our hope, on this journey, that we may paint new images of Africa and its diaspora which align to that which we know; to educate our children of our success and failures; and to share our knowledge, life, and wisdom with those within and beyond our borders.

We welcome you to The Nurubian.
